The Market

South Africa has a relatively sophisticated and largely unregulated media infrastructure. There are more than 400 newspaper and magazine titles, more than 50 radio stations, four free-to-air TV channels, one pay-TV channel, and a digital satellite pay-TV network. Further liberalization of the broadest environment should see this infrastructure grow considerably in the coming years. With some 40 percent of the South African population still structurally unemployed and with high levels of illiteracy, particularly in the rural areas, radio and TV are powerful media. Government ownership is confined to three of the four free-to-air TV channels and a handful of radio stations. There are two major news syndication networks. After almost a decade of rampant inflation, high interest rate, and negligible economic growth, government monetary and fiscal discipline has yielded a more stable economy that has restored growth and boosted business confidence tremendously. This is coming forward in a number of impressive infrastructure and development projects leading up to the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Digital media is also growing impressively with a large number of respectable online media and an active blogger community.
